How Does a Conventional Septic System Work?

Your septic system is an underground wastewater treatment structure. Wastewater runs out of your home into a centralized drainage pipe, which flows into your septic tank. Your septic tank is a buried sealed container that stores the wastewater for a period of time. This storage time allows for solids to separate from oil/grease (solids at the bottom is called sludge, and the oil/grease at the top is scum). Then, a t-shaped filter prevents most solids from entering the outlet pipe. The outlet pipe helps the “effluent” navigate to the distribution box where it flows into pipes with holes so that it can then seep into the drain field. The drain field is surrounded by gravel so that the seeping water can reach the soil and oxygen can access the bacteria.
